U.S. Embassy in Baghdad launches Military Passport Agent Program
May 13, 2008
The Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad is happy to announce the launch of the first military passport agent program in Iraq. This pilot program is a partnership with the Staff Judge Advocate office, 3d MAW (FWD) at Al Asad airbase. With a military passport agent in place at Al Asad, service members in the area no longer have to travel to the International Zone in order to obtain their U.S. passport. Service members can apply for their passport at Al Asad and have it delivered there, or in certain cases, directly to their base of operations. This will shorten their time out of action and will make it more convenient for service members to obtain passports for mid-tour R&R. Additionally, service members from the Al Asad area applying for passports at the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad no longer have to return to the Consular Section to pick up their passport. The legal office at Al Asad airbase can assist the following operating bases: Fallujah, Ramadi, TQ, Haditha, Hit, Rawah, Al Qaim, KV, Rutbah, and Habbaniyah.
The Consular Section plans to expand this program to other regional legal offices to increase opportunities for U.S. service members to obtain their passports in Iraq. This program could not be possible without the strong cooperation and collaboration between the U.S. Department of State and the Department of Defense.
