Toys for Tots in the International Zone

Baghdad, Iraq
December 28, 2005

Today, U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Zalmay Khalilzad went to a Nursery School and Middle School in the International Zone in Baghdad to distribute toys with the Embassy’s Marine Security Guard (MSG) detachment. As part of the US Marine Corps annual Toys for Tots program, all the Marines working at the US Embassy in Baghdad collected toys from personnel working on the compound. They received over 800 donations to be given to the children of Baghdad.

“These children are the future of Iraq. It is wonderful to be able to do something to bring smiles to their faces today,” said Ambassador Khalilzad. “It is an honor to be with these young Marines and be part of their effort to spread the generosity of the American people to some Iraqi children and share in the spirit of the season.”

Like most U.S. Embassies around the world, Embassy Baghdad has a detachment of Marine Security Guards assigned specifically to protect it. The Ambassador delivered the toys today with these Marines. The rest of the toys will be delivered to other schools, hospitals and orphanages throughout Baghdad by the Embassy’s Personal Security Detail (PSDs) Teams in coordination with the Regional Security Office (RSO) of the Embassy.
