Statement by U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad On The Unity Of Iraq

There has been much debate, consternation, and pain amongst Iraqis in the aftermath of the announcement of Kurdistan Decree Number 60 dealing with the flag issue. Article 12 of the Iraqi constitution provides a roadmap for issues dealing with the flag of Iraq. Decisions on Iraq’s national symbols must be made by the Iraqi people as a whole through an established constitutional process. The United States supports such a process and reaffirms its commitment to Iraq’s unity, territorial integrity and sovereignty.
