Information for Travelers

Travel Notices and Announcements

The Department of State continues to strongly warn U.S. citizens against travel to Iraq, which remains very dangerous. If you are considering traveling or moving to Iraq, please read through the notices and announcements below to learn about the current conditions you can expect to encounter. We also highly recommend that you register your trip with us.

INFORMATION FOR VICTIMS OF CRIME:  The loss or theft abroad of a U.S. passport should be reported immediately to the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.  If you are the victim of a crime while overseas, in addition to reporting to local police, please contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate for assistance.  While U.S. Consular Services in Iraq are limited due to security conditions, the Embassy/Consulate staff can, for example, assist you to contact family members or friends and explain how funds could be transferred.  Although the investigation and prosecution of the crime is solely the responsibility of local authorities, consular officers can help you to understand the local criminal justice process and to find an attorney if needed. See our information on Victims of Crime.

American Citizen Registration

Registration information is protected by the Privacy Act and is not shared with anyone unless the registrant authorizes a release.

Registration enables the Embassy to assist Americans who lose their passports to obtain a replacement, and to provide essential information during emergencies such as evacuations.

Americans may register online through the Department of State's secure Internet-Based Registration System. This new Internet travel registration service for American citizens allows you to register and update your contact information on the Internet at any time, making it easier for you to keep your information current. The site also provides you with up-to-date travel information customized to your unique travel agenda and itinerary. This data you provide is secured behind Department of State firewalls, accessed only by cleared personnel in embassies, consulates, and the Department of State, and releasable only with your permission under the provisions of the Privacy Act.
