Statement by Ambassador Ryan C. Crocker on the Pledge by Sayyid Muqtada al-Sadr to Extend the Cease Fire

The United States Embassy welcomes Sayyid Muqtada al-Sadr’s pledge to extend the cease fire that has contributed to the reduction of violence in Iraq.
The original cease fire, which began in August 2007, proved to be helpful in reducing violence across Iraq while furthering reconciliation efforts. The renewal of the cease fire is a positive step that can further reduce violence and help secure the new Iraq. The people of Iraq are the beneficiaries of the extension of the cease fire.
