U.S. Ambassador Commends Local Cultural and Ecological Preservation in Maysan and Dhi Qar Provinces

December 21, 2008

U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker visited local leaders in Maysan and Dhi Qar provinces on December 17-18. The two-day visit included tours of the Huwayzeh marshes of Maysan, the ancient site of Ur in Nasiriyah, and other reconstruction projects. During his visit, Ambassador Crocker commended local efforts to rehabilitate and preserve the area's major cultural and ecological sites.

A river tour of the marshes in traditional Maysani boats showcased efforts to revive a fragile water ecosystem that dykes built by the previous regime had severely damaged. Local leaders and sheiks also explained how traditional life in the area had suffered as the vital marsh waters were diverted. Ambassador Crocker recognized the courage of local leaders and residents who sought to preserve their traditions.  "I commend all of you for your courage in opposition to the tyranny of the regime of Saddam Hussein," he said.

A tour of the ancient ruins of Ur in Nasiriyah demonstrated the challenges of preserving Iraq's ancient historical sites. "These remarkable artifacts highlight the prominent place Iraq holds in world heritage," Ambassador Crocker commented. He noted that under the previous regime many such sites suffered decades of systematic neglect. The United States is working with Iraqi officials to develop management plans for sites and to train Iraqi archeologists and museum personnel.

Ambassador Crocker also viewed construction of a surgical hospital in Maysan Province, which is funded by the United States. Iraqi police and army commanders outlined their increasing capacity to provide security. Maysan provincial authorities briefed the Ambassador on development and security issues, some of which are being supported by the Provincial Reconstruction Teams or the Multi-National Division Center. Ambassador Crocker remarked how encouraged he was by the reconstruction, economic development, and security gains he observed in the two provinces.
